This census is extremely hard
to read. Most of the pages are very dark with large smudges. Other papers
are too light to see the pen strokes. I have used question marks on names
where I am unsure of the spelling. I have tried to do letter by letter
transcriptions of the illegible names. In cases where I have used a second
translation of the word, I have put it in parentheses. The first word is
what I think the name is, the second word is what it COULD BE.
The census taker was Charles Howes (Howis,
Cowis). It looks like he started off using initials only; then, either
he or someone else, tried to fill in the complete names between initials.
His handwriting varied from day to day and house to house. There is one
capital letter I have yet to understand. It looks like an N, but is not
used as one. It could be an A.
I hope this helps rather than hurts. If you find
a family with qustion marks and you can fill in some of the question marks,
please do so. This is an on-going work and I will be updating it as often
as I can spend time in the library (about once a week). There about 50
lines per page and every other page is numbered, 100 names to a page number.
