KENT, ODDIE D. - Texas City — Oddie D. Kent, 63, of Texas City passed away Friday, August 8, 2003, at Memorial Southeast Hospital in Houston. He was born September 25, 1939, in Itawamba County, Mississippi and had resided in Texas City for 29 years. Oddie was a retired machinist at Union Carbide with 27 years of service and a member of Machinist Local 1446. He was a past president and member of the Galveston County (Softball) Umpire Association. His passion was breeding and raising Greyhounds as one of the owner's and breeder of Cousin's Pups. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Jane Kent of Texas City; mother-in-law, Ursula Anderson of Texas City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Eddie Murphy of Marriette, Mississippi, Karen and Victor Stowe of Santa Fe, Tx., Keri and Abe Daly Jr. of Friendswood, Tx; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Tina Kent of Nettleton, Mississippi, Kennedy and Claire Colombo of Austin, Tx., Kristopher and Teresa Colombo of Texas City. KESSLER, JOSEPH 'LEO' - Santa Fe - Joseph "Leo" Kessler, died peacefully August 13, 2003, in Santa Fe, Texas surrounded by family. Leo, as he was known to friends and co-workers in the funeral business, had resided in San Antonio for most of his 81 years. Born in San Antonio February 5, 1922, to Emil and Mary Geistman Kessler, he attended catholic schools graduating from Central in 1940. He proudly served his country in WWII both in the Philippines and Japan. Joe graduated from Lundig College of Mortuary science class of 1941, and dedicated his life to serving area families. Joe came to Texas City to help during the 1947, disaster and was recognized for his efforts in a national magazine article. He moved to Texas City in 1963, and lived there for 5 years, before returning to San Antonio retiring at Sunset Funeral Home.His parents, a sister Josephine Kessler Cox, brother Melvin, and infant daughter Lola Marie preceded him in death. Joe is survived by sons Wayne (Lisa) Kessler of Santa Fe, Texas, Larry Kessler of Scottsdale, Arizona, and daughter Janel Kessler Popovich of Galveston. He has six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, all of whom will miss him very much. Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, August 15, 2003, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the Zizik-Kearns Funeral Home. Interment followed at Palms Cemetery in Dayton. Mr. Kibbe died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Veterans memorial Hospital in Houston. He was a native of Galveston and had lived in Liberty for the past 10 years. He was a mechanic at Wal-Mart in Liberty for the past nine years. He enjoyed show pigeons, gardening, wood working and being outdoors.

KING, JIMMY - Lovelady, TX - Mr. James Henderson King, 99, of Lovelady, passed away Sunday, October 5, 2003, in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mr. King was born January 16, 1904, in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. He was the fifth and youngest child of Confederate Veteran John Howard King and Ida Florence King. Proud of his heritage, Mr. King was a charter member of the John Bell Hood Camp 50, Sons of Confederate Veterans and one of only a few "Real Sons" in the international organization. He was a member of the Lovelady Masonic Lodge #539. Mr. King was an active member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Lovelady for over half a century, later serving as Deacon Emeritus.

KIRKS, MRS. CLARA MAE 'GRAN' - Galveston - Clara Mae Kirks, known to all as "Gran" was born on March 1, 1919, in Galveston, Texas, to the union of Louis and Rosa Clark. She attended West District Elem. and was a 1937, graduate of Central High School. She was employed as a receptionist for the legendary Stanton, one of the only two black private medical practices in Galveston. Clara was also a Medical Records Tech., at UTMB for over twenty years. Clara was also an aspiring writer of children books and published in various magazines in her day. She was a faithful member of the First Union Baptist Church, where she was baptized at the tender age of eleven years old. Mrs. Knight was born December 2, 1912 in Galveston, Texas, the daughter of Charles Parnell Benn and Emma Eloise Schwab Benn. She was a resident of Houston and formerly of La Marque and Texas City. She devoted her time to the church nursery and was a member of the Prime Time Singers at the West University Baptist Church in Houston. She is preceded in death by her husband, Commander Leonard J. Knight of the U.S. Coast Guard and her parents, Charles and Eloise Benn. Mrs. Knight is survived by her cousins, Harry and Elizabeth Jarvis of Houston, John and Eldora Schwab of California, Wayne and Linda Benson of Houston; sister-in-law Virginia Benn of Houston.
